A Tasty Tasting Dinner

M invited to a bbq dinner, opened some fine bottles, and some of the guest also brought bottles. All tasted double blind.

2006 Blanc de Blancs Vieilles Vignes Extra Brut, Le Brun Servenay
A cool, bread filled nose with notes of lemon licorice, smoke and dry fudge. A fine spicy note after a while.
The taste is finely tuned with a hint of maturity, a fine lemon cream note, a tad bitterness in the finish.
89p   (tasted 2025/07)

2009 Rossj-Bass, Gaja
A mature, stifled nose with notes of yellow pears, oli cloth and dried flowers. A tad heavy.
The taste is warm and full with notes of fried spices, dried pears and earth. Again, a tad heavy.
85p   (tasted 2025/07)

2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Remilly, Philippe Colin
A young, focused nose with notes of tangerines, cap gun smoke and ripe flowers. Gorgeous.
The taste is structured and fine with notes of dry caramel, white pepper and sweet minerals. Very long and distinct. Great wine.
95p   (tasted 2025/07)

2023 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Virondot, Domaine Marc Morey
An outgoing, lush nose with notes of grilled lemons, popcorn and spices. Some oak notes. Very young.
The taste is large scaled and nicely focused with notes of ripe peach, smoke and warm grass. Very long. 7+ years.
92p   (tasted 2025/07)

1961 Barolo Riserva, Borgogno
A mature, earthy nose with notes of dry violets, meat stock, autumn leaves and stale Coca-Cola.
The taste is warm and fine with notes of dried up cherry jam, wet earth and dry tobacco. A bit past its best but a nice drink.
86p   (tasted 2025/07)

1978 Barolo Riserva, Prunotto
A deep, layered nose with notes of dried cherries, dried flowers, paint and Langhe earth. Very fine.
The taste is racy and fresh for its age with gorgeous fruit, still some perky tannins and a long, structured finish. On top of its game but bottles like this will go on for 10+ years.
93p   (tasted 2025/07)

2007 Giusto di Notri, Tua Rita
A rich, concentrated nose with notes of asphalt, sweet violets, plums and ripe flowers. Intense and very fine.

96p   (tasted 2025/07)

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Da Capo, Domaine Pegau
A high, pure nose with notes of fried herbs, ripe raspberries, licorice and scorched earth. Very concentrated.
The taste is upfront and seedy with sweet rasberry/chocolate flavours and additional notes of tobacco, forest floor and spices. Very, very long. Highly drinkable now and the coming 10+ years.
95p   (tasted 2025/07)

2002 Astralis, Clarendon Hills
I had this beauty pegged as a truly fine Cali Syrah, but it comes from another continent. Probably the best wine tasted so far this year.
The nose soars up from the glass with intensity, complexity and focus. Stunning notes of grilled meat, tar, blackberries, leather and some stables aromas. Bottomless deep.
The taste is taut and impressive with every knot and bolt in place. Notes of sweet violets, meat stock, iron, ripe blueberries and leather. The finish goes on forever. Faultless.
99p   (tasted 2025/07)

2019 Barolo Del Comune di Serralunga, Ferdinando Principiano
I visited the cantina in July 2023 - Barolista: A Couple Of Days In Piedmont - Visit To Ferdinando Principiano - and subsequently bought some bottles. The 2019 Barolo offers up a earthy, fine nose with notes of hard cherry candy, paint and Langhe earth. A tad more locked up compared to two years ago.
The taste is young and tight with perky Serralunga tannins and notes of bakelite, red currants, tobacco and paint. Needs time, 6+ years.
90p   (tasted 2025/07)

2018 Barolo Albarella, Serio & Battista Borgogno
I tasted the 2019 in January 2023 at the cantina - Barolista: The Barolo Boys In Piedmont - Visit To Serio & Battista Borgogno.
The 2018 is the first vintage of Albarella, a MGA in Barolo, from the cantina, made in only 700 bottles with four different labels. The nose is low keyed and handsome with notes of dried strawberries, red currants, nailpolish and licorice.

A Thursday Impromptu Tasting Dinner With A 1982 Latour & More

I called some friends that was still in town during the summer. We were five that drank and ate well.

2012 Blanc de Blancs, Robert Moncuit
A very handsome, stony nose with notes of smoke, dry caramel and lemon cream. Very fine.
The taste is dry and elegant with a very fine acidity, ripe yellow fruit and a long, lingering finish. Drinking perfectly today.
94p   (tasted 2025/07)

The Whites:
1994 Cuvée Frédérick Emilé, Trimbach
A laid back, mature nose with notes of dried peach, mushrooms and smoke. Very, very good.
The taste is cool and dry with notes of candle grease, matchbox and dried peach. Balanced. Maybe a tad short.
89p   (tasted 2025/07)

2007 Saarburger Rausch Riesling Kabinett, Ziliken
A fresh, stony nose with notes of elderberries, lime and white sugar candy. Upfront and juicy.
The taste is young and ripe with a fine balance between structure and acidity. Long and fine. 6+ years.
92p   (tasted 2025/07)

2021 Norheimer Dellchen Riesling GG, Dönnhoff
M brought this. Apparently a 100p wine, but I can´t see that, at least not on this side of 2050. The nose is very young, seedy and anorectic with notes of cucumber water, chives, birch leaves and slate. And only after you swirl the glass vigorously.
The taste is cool and with a singular intensity in the form of chrushed rocks. Where is the fruit? Is this made from rocks? Very pure. Wait 20+ years, at least...
88p   (tasted 2025/07)

2022 Maranges En Buliet, Domaine Elodie Roy
A Chardonnay from the unknown parts of Burgundy, from a upcoming star according to L & M who brought it. The nose is young and fresh with notes of pears, cookie dough and warm grass.
The taste is fruity and fine with a fine structure and acidity, notes of smoke and tangerines. Very, very good.
88p   (tasted 2025/07)

The Reds:
2001 Barolo Cannubi Boschis, Sandrone
One of my 100p bottles, tasted five timed before this night. The nose is very deep and refined with gorgeous notes of dried cherries, licorice, Langhe earth and roses.
The taste is mature and velvety with notes of dried up cherry jam, undergrowth, violets and earth. A very fine warmth. Very, very long. The nose is a solid 100p but the the palate is a tad more tired than I have hoped. Still a stunning wine.
97p   (tasted 2025/07)

2002 Château Cos d´Estournel
An upfront, warm nose with notes of ceder, tobacco, dried black currants and some oaky notes. Very fine.
The taste is structured and fine with silky tannins, lots of red and black currants, tobacco and sugared coffee. Long and lingering. Almost fully mature.
93p   (tasted 2025/07)

2001 Shiraz, Rosemount Estate
A warm, open nose with notes of toothpaste, charcoal, blackberries and mocha. Very much alive.
The taste is big and concentrated with fiery black fruit but lacks a bit of focus. Still impressive to be alive and kicking.
86p   (tasted 2025/07)

1982 Château Grand Ormeau
Corked! #¤%&%¤#%&
I had mailed the estate asking for information and I got a very fine, friendly answer, and then it was corked! I had hoped to be able to return the favour with a positive (but honest) review.
Not rated   (tasted 2025/07)

1982 Château Latour
My last bottle of a batch bought in 1991 for 50 Euro/bottle, those were the days... The nose is a knock out of the park with complexity, intensity and fruit to die for.
The taste is not as awesome as the nose but I´m not complaining for this is a world class wine, with notes of perfectly ripe black currants, graphite and band aid. The finish is counted in minutes. Will go on forever. Tasted five times before - four times 100p and one 98p, which also is the score for this bottle.
98p   (tasted 2025/07)

1981 Vigorello, San Felice
A nicely concentrated, mature nose with notes of dry dark fudge, plums, violets and a hint of tooth paste. Round and good.
The taste is warm and sandy with soft tannins and a nice plummy fruit. Fully mature.
Vigorello was one of the first Super Tuscans with their 1968 vintage (of which I have a bottle :-). Back then it was a 100% Sangiovese wine. By now it is a blend of Pugnitello, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
87p   (tasted 2025/07)

1982 Château Tourans
I opened these two 82´s as replacements for the corked Grand Ormeau. The Château Tourans opens with a cool, elegant nose with notes of dried plums, spices and pipe tobacco. Very, very good.
The taste is nicely concentrated with a perfect maturity, silky tannins and a fine dried up sweetness. Bottles like this will continue for another 8+ years.
88p   (tasted 2025/07)

1982 Château Haut Milon
This Pauillac displays a rough around the edges nose with notes of dried black currants, iron, gravel and some band aid.
The taste is dry and a tad foursquare with dried red and black currant, dry tobacco and earth. Still some unresolved tannins but the fruit will not keep the distance.
82p   (tasted 2025/07)

And to finish the evening of:
20 Year Quinta do Bom Retiro, Ramos-Pinto
A very deep, mature nose with notes of fried nuts, damsons, old chocolate and detergent. A lovely dried up sweetness.
The taste is rich and concentrated with fiery notes, dried black fruit and assorted nuts. Very long.

2019 Santenay 1er Cru Clos Rosseau, Camille Giroud
A gorgeous old school Pinot nose with notes of (over)ripe raspberries, forest floor, ripe flowers, semi rotten vegetables, rhubarb and violet pastilles. Just lovely.
The taste is elegant and balanced with a fine warmth, a fine acidity and notes of ripe raspberries, salmiak and fresh herbs. Long and fine.
93p   (tasted 2025/07)

Monday, 21 July 2025

2019 Chianti Classico, Fontodi

2019 Chianti Classico, Fontodi
A high, broad nose with notes of dried cherries, damsons, forest floor, rosemary and some fine balsamic notes. A classic Sangiovese nose.
The taste is tight and fine with a fine acidity, sour/sweet cherries, tobacco and Tuscan gravel. Very fine.
92p   (tasted 2025/07)

A Visit To Stora Boråkra Winery

I was passing Karlskrona in the south of Sweden and Stora Boråkra caught my eye. The winery started in 2009 and by now is planted with 4000 vines of Solaris. They make four wines - Solaris, Solaris Berså, a Rosé and a sparkling wine.
I contacted Staffan Ottosson, who is the owner and winemaker, and he kindly arranged a tasting for me.

2019 Solaris
Staffan was ever so kind, so he opened four vintages of his Solaris. The 2019 offers up a grassy, fine nose with notes of steel and candied lemons. A hint of maturity.
The taste is fresh and balanced with crisp yellow fruit and fine acidity. A tad short though.
85p   (tasted 2025/07)

2021 Solaris
The -21 is very, very good, with a upfront, snappy nose with notes of cement, white pepper and ripe lemons.

2024 Solaris
The -24 Solaris displays a young, fresh nose with notes of candied lemons, gravel, birch leaves and a hint of dry fudge.

89p   (tasted 2025/07)

NV Brut
As with the Solaris, Staffan kindly opened three bottles of their Brut. This is a blend of the 2018 and 2019 vintages. The nose is deep and mature with notes of autumn apples, gravel and fennel seeds.
The taste is open and direct with a very fine acidity and mature lemon notes.
All the Brut´s have 6,5 gr dosage.
88p   (tasted 2025/07)

2020 Brut
A delicate, fresh nose with notes of red apples, tangerines and moist earth. Very fine.
The taste is pure and seedy with gorgeous fruit, a fresh acidity and a long, silky finish.
90p   (tasted 2025/07)

2021 Brut
Just one year younger that the -20 but very locked up on the nose with notes of green apples, ripening pears and chrushed rocks.
The taste is tight and highly strung with a high acidity and notes of green apple peel, gravel and herbs. Needs time.
