1958 Cappellano Labels

A comment by Fredrik on my earlier post of the mystery vintage of Cappellano linked me to a tasting of 58 Barolo´s and a Cappellano tasting, both with the 1958 Cappellano present.

I looked at the great photos and thought nothing more of it, but there was something nagging in the back of my head. This morning I got it - the label isn´t the same on those bottles and the two 1958 Cappellano I have.

Lets explore:

One of two identical 58 labels from my cellar

One of the bottles Fredrik tasted
And a third variant is from Ken Vastola´s Cappellano tasting where the label is more like the ones I own by not identical, the word "Vino" is missing from just under the picture on the label.

From Ken Vastolas´s tasting
I guess it could be as easy as that the bought labels as they went along and sold of the bottles, who had been bottled but not labeled. But why, at least, three different variants?
Anyone with more insight, get in touch!

  1. A puzzlement... there a several differences. My 58 looks more like your 64 but the 64's missing some text between black box Cappellano and Az. Agricola... and the label has no jagged edges..

    1. The plot thickens...:-) I have emailed Ken Vastola - lets see if he can shed some light over this.

  2. As I understand they sold these wines under a long time hence the different labels. I had a 1947 Borgogno Barolo Riserva recently with the text "Propri Vigneti Canubbi" instead of the more common "Antichi Vigneti Propri" (As you can see on the Borgogno '58 in the back of Fredriks photo.
Cappellano where a big land owner back then so I suppose the produced a lot of wine. I thought it was interesting that it was different colours of the glass bottles (green and brown) on the two Cappellano's I had. Is it different bottlings too?

    1. Thanks Tomas! This starts to get interesting - the two 58`s, the 61 and the 67 bottles are green glass ones, but the one with the missing vintage slip is brown...:-)

    2. I forgot to mention that the green and brown bottles were both from 1958, but i didn't purchase them at the same time.

    3. I did not buy the two 58´s I have from the same source either, but they seem to be identical.

  3. Another bottle with almost the same label as you have: http://annunci.ebay.it/annunci/antiquariato/torino-annunci-torino/bottiglia-di-barolo-del-1958/42963332
The main difference is that the label on your bottle is missin the "notches" at the edges. Son now we have 3 different labels for the same vintage.
