A Couple Of Days In Piedmont - Visits To Cascina Del Monastero & Mauro Molino

This is the second part of my last day in Piedmont, with reports from two great visits in La Morra.

Cascina del Monastero
Tasting with Loris Grasso is like taking a roller coast ride. A very fun one. And very intense and mind boggling. His energy level is of the charts and he wants to communicate everything at once. What a visit! One of the most memorable, ever. And the wines! I´ll be back.

2016 Barolo Riserva Bricco Rocca
When walking through the cellar, Loris took a sample from a cask and made me guess... The nose has a wonderful sweet/sour cherry fruit alongside deep notes of undergrowth, rosehips and paint. Just lovely.
The taste is handsome and balanced with silky cherry fruit and notes of chrushed rocks, parsnips and violets. This is a stunner in the making.

2015 Dolcetto d´Alba
Back at the tasting room, the first wine poured was this Dolcetto with a deep nose with lots of violets, blueberries and sun warm rocks. A fine concentration.
The taste is tight and finely tuned with a very nice blueberry and cranberry fruit alongside notes of dusty earth and dry tobacco. Lots of character.

2016 Langhe Rosso Sarset
100% Merlot! 3.000 bt made. It has a high, pure, flowery nose with notes of ripe plums, clay and a hint of dark chocolate. Very deep and fine.
The taste is deep and spicy with notes of plums, Christmas spices and dark chocolate. Very long and intense. Lovely.

2013 Barbera d´Alba Superiore Leprié
The grapes comes from Perno. The nose shows a low keyed warmth with notes of raspberries, rhubarb, licorice and wam sand. Very, very good.
The taste is fruity and fine with notes of raspberry licorice, scorched earth and smoke. Very long, juicy and fine.

Very deep and sumptuous, this young Barbera is impressive, with a tight, concentrated nose with notes of fried herbs, ripe raspberries, Finnish licorice and tobacco. Very fine.

2011 Barolo Riserva Bricco Rocca Riund
The 11 Bricco Rocca is even better than the 09 with added focus and delineation. The fruit is perfect, the balance is perfect, the tannins are polished with the finest cloth, the finish is looooong and the overall assessment is that of a spine tingling wine. I need plenty of this. 8+ years.

2013 Barolo Bricco Luciani
Loris opened two bottles of the 13 Luciani, one bottled in 2017 and the other one in 2018. There are differences between them and today I prefer the 2018 bottling, the ripe cherry fruit is deeper, rounder and appears more sweet. There are aslo notes of Finnish licorice, undergrowth and tobacco in both wines.
The taste is also better from the 2018 bottling, again, the fruit comes across as sweeter and more harmonious. Very long with juicy tannins. Either bottling should be cellared for 8+ years.
