A Couple Of Days In Piedmont - Visit To Giacomo Fenocchio & Giacomo Anselma

Giacomo Fenocchio
A friend of mine was convinced that I had already visited this estate with him, but again, this is what alcohol does to you... My first visit and a very nice one. Roberto took great care of me during my visit.

2021 Arneis
A crisp, light nose with notes of lemon candy and tangerines.
The taste is pure and tight with the trade marks of white pepper, red currants and gravel. Very good.
86p   (tasted 2022/09)

2021 Langhe Rosé
100% Nebbiolo. A cool, spicy nose with notes of lingonberries, tangerines and a fine flowery notes.
The taste is young and seedy with notes of red apples, tangerines and chrushed rocks. Very, very good. Hints of Nebbiolo tannins in the finish.
87p   (tasted 2022/09)

2019 Anima Arancio
This is the same wine as the Arneis above but the treatment in the cellar is different with a month of maceration instead of a day for the Arneis. The nose is big and complex with notes of dried apricots, hot gravel and red apples.
The taste is tight and dry with a high acidity, lots of dried red fruits and a ling, dry finish. Very, very good.
88p   (tasted 2022/09)

2021 Dolcetto d´Alba
A upfront, juicy Dolcetto with notes of a mix of raspberries and blueberries mixed with earth, iron and bakelite.
The taste is fresh and straight to the point with good fruit, tannins and very good, dry finish.
87p   (tasted 2022/09)

2020 Barbera Superiore
A laid back, dark nose with notes of dried raspberries, licorice and wet asphalt. Very, very good.
The taste is upfront and fruity with a fine warmth, a very good acidity and a long, ripe finish.
88p   (tasted 2022/09)

2020 Langhe Nebbiolo
A very elegant, fine nose with notes of earth, dried mushrooms, red cherries and rosehips. Very, very good.
The taste is silky and fresh with juicy tannins and a very good cherry fruit. Long and fine. 4+ years.
90p   (tasted 2022/09)

2019 Barolo Cannubi
Then Roberto asked if I would like to taste some Baroli from barrels. Does the the pope have a funny hat?!
The 19 Cannubi oozes elegance and purity with a really fine concentration and length.
~94p   (tasted 2022/09)

2020 Barolo Cannubi
The one year younger Cannubi is at this stage more backward on the nose but displays the same focus and concentration on the palate.
~93p   (tasted 2022/09)

2019 Barolo Castellero
Tight, cool and very deep on the nose and the taste is handsome, refined and racy.
~93p   (tasted 2022/09)

2019 Barolo Villero
Oooh boy, what a wine. This is already brilliant and is going to have a great future ahead of it.
~96p   (tasted 2022/09)

2019 Barolo Bussia
Bigger and bolder with massive fruit ans structure, this is one for aging long before doing the deed.
~95p   (tasted 2022/09)

2018 Barolo Bussia 90 Di
Just breathtakingly beautiful, everything in place and perfection in the making, just give this beauty 10+ years.
~97p   (tasted 2022/09)

Ciacomo Anselma
A small producer that makes around 30.000 bottles per year. Maria took great care of me and talked about the wines and the history of the family.

2020 Dolcetto d´Alba
I thought that both the Dolcetto and the Barbera were a bit too rustic for my taste. The nose on the Dolcetto is earthy and farmyardy with some dried old red fruit.
The taste is tight and dry in the middle with rustic tannins and dried fruit.
80p   (tasted 2022/09)

2020 Barbera d´Alba
The nose is big and warm with cooked red fruit, moist earth and dry spices.
The taste is big and brawny with notes of burnt bread, cooked red fruit and old wood.
78p   (tasted 2022/09)

2013 Barolo Riserva Collaretta
But the two Baroli were stellar. The Collaretta shows of a nicely concentrated nose with note of dried cherries, undergrowth, tobacco, iron and hints of dog fur (in a positive sense). Deep and fine.
The taste is taut and dry in an old school way with stern tannins, dried red fruits, rosehips and asphalt. Long. Has spent 5 years in 42 hl Slovenian oak. 6+ years.
90p   (tasted 2022/09)

2013 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda
This gorgeous creature has spent 8 years in wood before bottling. The result is stunning. The nose is very deep with notes of hard cherry candy, dry tobacco, dried strawberries and a very fine balsamic note. Just lovely.
The taste is structured and refined with a very fine balance between fruit, tannins and acidity. Very, very long. Impressive, one for the ages.

2017 Barolo Roncaglie, Chionetti

2017 Barolo Roncaglie, Chionetti
The first vintage of Roncaglie from Chionetti. I have previous tastes Chionetti´s 2015 Bussia Vigna Pianpolvere (also the first vintage of that Cru) when I visited the estate - Barolista: A Couple Of Days In Piedmont - Visits To Fratelli Barale & Chionetti and the 2016 at Grandi Langhe - Barolista: 2016 Barolo At Grandi Langhe.
The 17 Roncaglie shows of a deep, complex nose with notes of ripe red cherries, forest floor, rosehips, polished mahogany and dried flowers. Very fine.
The taste is tight and intense with notes of ripe cherries with some wild strawberries tossed in, bakelite, rosehips and hints of tobacco. Very long. 8+ years.

2016 Dolcetto d´Alba, Flavio Roddolo

2016 Dolcetto d´Alba, Flavio Roddolo
A deep, velvety nose with interesting notes of dark dried fruit, red pesto, iron and raspberry licorice. More akin to a Barbera than a Dolcetto. Very, very good.
The taste is finely structured with a fine warmth, very good fruit and a long, silky finish. Again, more Barbera in style. It doesn´t get an A for typicity but its a really, really good drink.

A Couple Of Days In Piedmont - A Day In Dogliani

Anna Maria Abbona
My first visit was to Anna Maria Abbona. Celina took great care of me and I also got to talk a while with Anna Maria who started 35 years ago when the production was 600 bottles...  Now the estate has 22 ha, most over 500 m over sea level, and produce around 100.000 bottles per year.

NV Netta Brut
6 gr. The nose is cool and even elegant with notes of dry peach, tangerines and gravel. Very good.
The taste is nicely structured and feels more dry, in a good way, then the 6 gr indicates. Made from Nascetta grapes.

The taste is tight and fine with notes of white flowers, grape and minerals. A very good acidity. Steely.
90p   (tasted 2022/09)

2018 Langhe Riesling L´Alman
From this vintage 10% gets some time in used tonneaux. It makes the wine a tad rounder both on the nose and on the palate, with the same characteristics as the 2017. I prefer the steely, non oaked style.
87p   (tasted 2022/09)

2021 Rosà

The best Dolcetto I have ever tasted. From vines planted in 1943. The nose soars up from the glass with stunning notes of ripe blueberries, hard cherry candy, furniture polish and licorice en masse!
The taste is tight and beautifully concentrated with notes of licorice covered cherries, iron, dried up blueberry jam and forest floor. Finely balanced. Silky tannins. Great wine. 8+ years.

2019 Dogliani Superiore Bricco Botti
From 70 year old vines this Dolcetto offers up a tight, concentrated nose with notes of ripe cherries, blueberries, ink and herbs. A tad closed but there lots going on in the glass.
The taste is as closed on the palate as on the nose. This will need bottle age. But there is plenty of locked up fruit, a fine structure for aging and great potential. 8+ years.

Lunch! The best place is Osteria Battaglino and I had a table booked. A great lunch as you can see below :-)
