Four Nice Verdicchio´s

I got an invitation to taste wines from Marche and a Masterclass with bottles of Verdicchio.
Susanne held an interesting tasting, presenting the wines below.

2019 Q311, Piersanti
A fresh, grassy nose with notes of white currants, white pepper and ripening pears. A fine summer feeling.
The taste is light and juicy with notes of white currants, chives and sun warm gravel. A fine acidity. A plate of fried squid would be a perfect match.
86p   (tasted 2020/10)

2019 Vigna Vittoria, Luchetti
A deeper nose with notes of hay, tangerines, cement and a interesting note of dried up vanilla ice cream. Very, very good.
The taste is long and mineral laden with notes of gravel, tangerines and almond paste. A fine character.
88p   (tasted 2020/10)

2019 Macrina, Garofoli
A fine, herbal nose with notes of grass, dried peach and onion powder. A tad subdued but very good.
The taste is fresh and peppery with notes of grape, grass and gravel. A very good acidity. Very fine on the palate.
88p   (tasted 2020/10)

2018 Zecci Collezione, Piersanti
This apparently has some botrytized grapes in the blend, which is noticable on the nose in the shape of dried, sweet tangerines, grilled herbs, almond paste and gravel. A tad heavy handed.
The taste is spicy and medium rich with notes of ripe tangerines, warm grass and almond paste. A hint of bitterness in the finish.
84p   (tasted 2020/10)

2013, 2015, 2017 Dolcetto d´Alba, Sandrone

2013 Dolcetto d´Alba, Sandrone
A delicate, seedy nose with notes of cranberries, violets, fir wood and dried raspberries. A low keyed peppery note. Very, very good.
The taste is tight and dry with notes of a dried up blueberry pie, bakelite and iron. A fine dryness to the finish. Highly likeable in a dry, taut style.
89p   (tasted 2020/10)

2015 Dolcetto d´Alba, Sandrone
The nose is a tad subdued with notes of dry blueberries, violet pastilles and bonfire smoke. Some warmth. Very good but a tad locked up.
The taste is warm and seedy with notes of dried blueberries, warm sand and salted licorice. Big bodied. Warm. Very good but a tad marked by warmth.
87p   (tasted 2020/10)

2017 Dolcetto d´Alba, Sandrone
A young, spicy, upfront nose with notes of ripe blueberries, violet licorice, smoke and incense. Energetic and fine.
The taste is fresh and tight with notes of damsons, ripe blueberries, iron and ink. Perky tannins and a fine acidity. Very, very good. Same impression as when tasted at the estate in November 2018.
91p   (tasted 2020/10)

A Splendid Guigal Lunch

I was invited by Wine Affair to a lunch at the amazing Operakällaren to taste the new releases from Guigal alongside some older vintages. Philippe Guigal participated (after some initial technical difficulties) via Zoom and gave valuable information about the wines, vintages and much more, with his usual wit and charm.
A fantastic tasting!

Tasting
2019 Condrieu
An open, flowery nose with notes of peach, lavender and mosquito repellent. Very, very good.
The taste is pure and fleshy with notes of rose water, ripe peach and chrushed rocks. Long, fine with a good acidity.
90p   (tasted 2020/10)

2018 Condrieu La Doriane
I was fortunate enough to taste this and the Ex Voto below a couple of weeks ago and my impressions were the same as then.
93p   (tasted 2020/10)

2016 Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc
See above.
96p   (tasted 2020/10)

2017 Saint Joseph Vignes de L´Hospice
A deep, peppery nose with notes of cold meat, sun warm rocks and violets. Very pure and racy.
The taste is young, tight and concentrated with notes of violets, ripe blueberries and warm tiles. Polished tannins. Very long and very fine. 6+ years.
94p   (tasted 2020/10)

2016 Côte-Rôtie Château d´Ampuis
A very handsome, meaty nose with notes of ripe blueberries, bacon fat and ripe dark flowers.
The taste is tight and seedy with notes of scorched earth, blueberries, minerals and some tobacco notes. Long and balanced. 8+ years.
95p   (tasted 2020/10)

2016 Côte-Rôtie La Mouline
The three La La´s is simply amazing wines, with their own distinct character. La Mouline, normally my favourite, offers up a seamless nose with notes of ripe flowers, blackberries, violets and fresh herbs. Lovely.
The taste is taut and focused with notes of licorice, blackberries, rosemary and a gorgeously perfumed note. The finish goes on and on. 10+ years.
97p   (tasted 2020/10)

2016 Côte-Rôtie La Turque
On this occasion, La Turque, got my nod as the finest in this line up. The nose is dark and earthy with notes of granite, violets, meat and dried strawberries. Very complex and utterly gorgeous.
The taste is spicy and concentrated with notes of violets, salted blueberries, granite and dry licorice. The finish is counted in minutes. Just stunning. 10+ years.
98p   (tasted 2020/10)

2016 Côte-Rôtie La Landonne
I was very fortunate to taste this stunner a couple of weeks ago and it behaved identical at this tasting.
98p   (tasted 2020/10)

Lunch
2019 Côtes du Rhône Blanc
Some wines to go along the splendid food served. First up the perennial fine bottle of white Côtes du Rhone from Guigal - spicy and perfumed with fine yellow fruit, a good acidity and length.
87p   (tasted 2020/10)

2019 Condrieu La Doriane
The one year younger version of La Doriane is even better than the bottle above. The nose is deep and complex with notes of quince, fish sauce, sun warm rocks and ripe flowers. Gorgeous.
The taste is racy and refined with notes of ginger, ripe yellow pears, mineral and dried flowers. Very long. Great wine.
95p   (tasted 2020/10)

2017 Côtes du Rhone
As with the white, this is great value for money. The nose on the red is fresh and fruity with notes of ripe lingonberries, blueberries, earth and ligthly seared meat. Very, very good.
The taste is cool and clean with soft tannins, a good lenght and fine blueberry/raspberry fruit. Perfect for drinking now but this can age for 10+ years.
88p   (tasted 2020/10)

2011 Côte-Rôtie La Mouline
The order is restored! I have La Mouline as favourite among these three 2011. The nose is deep, maturing and just lovely with notes of dog fur, dried up raspberry jam, forest floor, lavender and white pepper. A very fine sweetness to the fruit.
The taste is rich and perfumed with notes of undergrowth, dried raspberries, lavender and sweet tobacco. Very long and velvety. Mature for a nine year old La La but ooooh so good.
95p   (tasted 2020/10)

2011 Côte-Rôtie La Turque
A very tight, inky nose with notes of cranberries, dried blueberries, bonfire smoke and iron. Sturdy and fine. Some maturity. Very fine.
The taste is restrained and earthy with notes of dried blueberries, iron, dry tobacco and warm tiles. Very long. More backbone than La Mouline. 6+ years.
94p   (tasted 2020/10)

2011 Côte-Rôtie La Landonne
As always, the most backward of the three, the La Landonne display a deep, dark nose with notes of dried herbs, blackberries, green peppers, smoke and some barnyard aromas, in a Bordeaux kind of way. Very fine.
The taste is tight and seedy with stern tannins, dark fruit and a finish that goes on for over a minute. Iron, violets, damsons. Needs time, 8+ years. Not the biggest charmer today.
93p   (tasted 2020/10)

2005 Côte-Rôtie Hommage Etienne Guigal
Only made in magnums (300 bottles) this 15 year old Hommage offers up a deep, smoky nose with notes of dried blueberries, soft earth, dried herbs and cigarette ashes. Deep and fine but lacks a little finesse.
The taste is big and brawny with notes of dried blueberries, violets and iron. Long and fine with some rugged tannins. Very, very good.
92p   (tasted 2020/10)

Two Oldies But Goodies

1988 Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg Riesling Spätlese Trocken, Schloss Schönborn
The nose is mature, soft and semi dry with notes of dried orange peel, apricots, wet asphalt, hay and rubber. Dry honey. Mature and interesting.
The taste is very much drier than the nose leads you to believe (but maybe not the label...) with notes of dry nuts, asphalt, dry grass and linoleum. Medium long and very good.
86p   (tasted 2020/10)

1990 Barbaresco Vigneto Rocche dei 7 Fratelli, Eredi Lodali
From a half bottle, this need some time in the glass before revealing fine notes of red currants, dry violets, shoe polish and sweet Langhe soil. Very, very good.
The taste is tight and earthy with notes of dried flowers, red cherries, licorice and some tobacco notes. A very fine dried up warmth. Long. Glad I have more half bottles.
89p   (tasted 2020/10)

Monday Tasting

We always have our monthly tastings in our tasting group on Mondays - a perfect way to start the week! This Monday HW poured the following.
Tasted double blind

2007 Faro Palari, Salvatore Geraci
It was many years since I tasted a bottle of Faro Palari. This shows of a nose with a hint of maturity and notes of ripe cherries, Finnish licorice, tobacco and lots of ripe flowers. Very, very good.
The taste is medium bodied and warm with notes of vanilla cooked cherries, dried flowers, undergrowth and tobacco. Soft tannins. Ready to drink.
89p   (tasted 2020/10)

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Le Vieux Donjon
The Ch-du-Pape´s (except for the Pegau) I guessed were hot and alcoholdriven Priorat bottles. But no, they were hot and alcoholdriven Châteauneuf bottles...
I am usually a fan of Le Vieux Donjon but this wine jumps out of the glass with notes of ripe plums, plywood, scorched earth and lighter fluid. Falls apart in the glass.
The taste is spicy and hot with notes of plums, fried herbs and hot asphalt. Long and fiery. Not for me.
82p   (tasted 2020/10)

1997 Michael Shiraz, Wynn´s
This this stood out at the oldest wine in the line up but I still managed to guess that it was a part of a coherent theme... A very fine bottle, this mature Shiraz offered up a big, open nose with notes of ripe blackberries, tobacco, pepper and a fine oak vanilla scent.
The taste is mature and velvety with notes of ripe black currants, blackberries, tobacco and pepper. A very good structure. Perfectly mature.
91p   (tasted 2020/10)

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin, Domaine de la Janasse
A big, forward, hot nose with notes of scorched earth, red currant jam, chocolate and diesel oil. As with the Donjon, implodes in the glass.
The taste is dry and seedy with notes of overripe red fruit, ink, fried herbs and earth. Long and fiery.
84p   (tasted 2020/10)

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuveée Reservée, Pegau
A very fine, somewhat restrained nose with notes of red currants, fresh herbs, smoke and some stable aromas. A understated elegance. Very fine.
The taste is sandy and fine with a mix of red and black fruits and additional notes of herbs, dry chocolate and smoke. Very long with a fine warmth. Lovely.
94p   (tasted 2020/10)

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château Beaucastel
A big, ripe nose with notes if ink, model clay, earth and blackberries. Very deep. There is lot of warmth here also but it keeps it in check. Very, very good.
The taste is big and steady with notes of plums, raisins, bonfire smoke and fried herbs. Very long and very warm. This is much better than the Janasse and the Donjon but the aftertaste still is fiery and very warm.
90p   (tasted 2020/10)

Sunday 18 October 2020

2006 Barolo Vigna Rionda, Luigi Pira

2006 Barolo Vigna Rionda, Luigi Pira
This adolescent needed a couple of hours in a decanter before offering up a lovely, complex nose with notes of ripe black cherries, asphalt, polished mahogany, iron and a touch of mint. Very pure and aristocratic. Lovely.
It was drunk over two day, on the second day the nose had become a tad more round and softer with dried black cherries, licorice and scorched earth. Still lovely!
The taste is seamless, structured and taut with notes of black cherries, violets, asphalt and warm tiles. Very long and intense. The tannins steamrolls over the palate. This needs lots of time, and today a steak.
On the second day the tannins appears a bit softer but they still make a mark on the palate. Wait 10+ years. Great wine.
95p   (tasted 2020/10)

Does the pope wear a funny hat?!

A Bottle Of Bubbly - NV Authentique Rosé, Barnaut

NV Authentique Rosé, Barnaut
A fine, delicate nose with notes of wild strawberries, raspberries, almond paste and wet asphalt. A fine, low keyed intensity. Highly likeable.
The taste is spicy and elegant with notes of wild strawberries, chrushed rock and red basil. A very fine acidity. Long and lingering. Very fine.
92p   (tasted 2020/10)

Wednesday 14 October 2020

2015 Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravières, Domaine Jessiaume

2015 Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravières, Domaine Jessiaume
A fine, delicate, refined nose with a hint of maturity and notes of red beets, balsamic marinated strawberries, licorice and a whiff of a fresh stable. Very handsome. Really good.
The taste is pure and creamy with notes of red beets, dried strawberries, rhubarb licorice and forest floor. A very fine acidity. Long and luscious. 5+ years. Wish I had more.
92p   (tasted 2020/10)

94p   (tasted 2020/10)

Thursday 8 October 2020

1996 Barolo Monvigliero, Fratelli Alessandria

1996 Barolo Monvigliero, Fratelli Alessandria
A round, mature nose with notes of cherry jam, cranberries, bay leaves and licorice. With air more forest floor notes comes forward. Very, very good. Feels fully mature.
The taste is medium bodied and silky with notes of ripe lingonberries, red tea, licorice and incense. Dusty Langhe earth. Drinking perfectly now.
91p   (tasted 2020/10)

2017 Pingus, Dominio de Pingus
Ok, how many cases will I order? For 850 Euro a bottle not that many...
The nose is very deep, very tight and at the moment a tad withdrawn. When you coax the glass you get some notes of fir wood, ripe cherries, a hint of vanilla and ripe undergrowth. High and structured. Needs plenty of time.
In the mouth the structure is even more obvious. Every not and bolt is in the right places but today the structure takes hold of the enjoyment. But there is lots of good things going on here, just wait 10+ years. I will not though. (?)

2015 Hillside Select, Shafer
Just perfect. Ah, well, it needs 10 years in the cellar before the three point score will be rewarded, but it will get there. Today it is a hedonist dream, velvety, massive fruit, intensity, balance and energy. The old Broadbent quote "an iron fist in a velvet glove" couldn´t be more fitting. Absolutely magnificent. Worth every cent. (10/12)

1993 Dolcetto d’Alba Borgo Asili, Lodali

1993 Dolcetto d’Alba Borgo Asili, Lodali
Opens up a tad funky but only with a little time in the glass, this 27 year old Dolcetto offers up fine notes of dried black cherries, chocolate biscuits, leather and rosehip on the nose. Very, very good. Still alive and kicking.
The taste is dry and mature with a fine warmth and notes of dry licorice, dried up cherry jam, earth and leather. The tannins still gives a tiny amount of resistence. This is good! Bottles like this (and I have more!) will easily go on for 8+ years.

2013 Barolo Perno, Cascina Del Monastero

2013 Barolo Perno, Cascina Del Monastero
I knew. Do not open a bottle! But I couldn´t resist. A six bottle parcel was delivered and I hadn´t tasted this before. I knew that the 13 Baroli have closed up.

But - resistense was futile!

Here I sit, three hours after the deed was done. The nose is gorgeous, almost right out of the bottle, with lovely notes of cranberries, shoe polish, iron, spices and a tiny scent of mint. Very fine.
But the taste... Hard as nails. Even after three hour in a decanter it hasn´t budged at all. Structured and seedy with fine grained tannins and locked in fruit. Long and tight with earthy notes, iron and dry licorice.
Based on this bottle, I will try, try hard not to open another bottle in 7 years time. Wish me luck!

Although, this bottle took me back to my visit to the Cascina del Monastero estate in August of last year, and meeting Loris, which still fills me with joy and admiration of his energy and commitment to make great wines. I will be back!

I have very fond memories of The Barolo Boys visit to the estate in 2009. We had a great tasting and then a long, wonderful lunch with Angelo Rocca (who died in a plane crash in 2012).

Angelo and his father

Lunch with Angelo
