A Thursday Impromptu Tasting Dinner With A 1982 Latour & More

I called some friends that was still in town during the summer. We were five that drank and ate well.

2012 Blanc de Blancs, Robert Moncuit
A very handsome, stony nose with notes of smoke, dry caramel and lemon cream. Very fine.
The taste is dry and elegant with a very fine acidity, ripe yellow fruit and a long, lingering finish. Drinking perfectly today.
94p   (tasted 2025/07)

The Whites:
1994 Cuvée Frédérick Emilé, Trimbach
A laid back, mature nose with notes of dried peach, mushrooms and smoke. Very, very good.
The taste is cool and dry with notes of candle grease, matchbox and dried peach. Balanced. Maybe a tad short.
89p   (tasted 2025/07)

2007 Saarburger Rausch Riesling Kabinett, Ziliken
A fresh, stony nose with notes of elderberries, lime and white sugar candy. Upfront and juicy.
The taste is young and ripe with a fine balance between structure and acidity. Long and fine. 6+ years.
92p   (tasted 2025/07)

2021 Norheimer Dellchen Riesling GG, Dönnhoff
M brought this. Apparently a 100p wine, but I can´t see that, at least not on this side of 2050. The nose is very young, seedy and anorectic with notes of cucumber water, chives, birch leaves and slate. And only after you swirl the glass vigorously.
The taste is cool and with a singular intensity in the form of chrushed rocks. Where is the fruit? Is this made from rocks? Very pure. Wait 20+ years, at least...
88p   (tasted 2025/07)

2022 Maranges En Buliet, Domaine Elodie Roy
A Chardonnay from the unknown parts of Burgundy, from a upcoming star according to L & M who brought it. The nose is young and fresh with notes of pears, cookie dough and warm grass.
The taste is fruity and fine with a fine structure and acidity, notes of smoke and tangerines. Very, very good.
88p   (tasted 2025/07)

The Reds:
2001 Barolo Cannubi Boschis, Sandrone
One of my 100p bottles, tasted five timed before this night. The nose is very deep and refined with gorgeous notes of dried cherries, licorice, Langhe earth and roses.
The taste is mature and velvety with notes of dried up cherry jam, undergrowth, violets and earth. A very fine warmth. Very, very long. The nose is a solid 100p but the the palate is a tad more tired than I have hoped. Still a stunning wine.
97p   (tasted 2025/07)

2002 Château Cos d´Estournel
An upfront, warm nose with notes of ceder, tobacco, dried black currants and some oaky notes. Very fine.
The taste is structured and fine with silky tannins, lots of red and black currants, tobacco and sugared coffee. Long and lingering. Almost fully mature.
93p   (tasted 2025/07)

2001 Shiraz, Rosemount Estate
A warm, open nose with notes of toothpaste, charcoal, blackberries and mocha. Very much alive.
The taste is big and concentrated with fiery black fruit but lacks a bit of focus. Still impressive to be alive and kicking.
86p   (tasted 2025/07)

1982 Château Grand Ormeau
Corked! #¤%&%¤#%&
I had mailed the estate asking for information and I got a very fine, friendly answer, and then it was corked! I had hoped to be able to return the favour with a positive (but honest) review.

1982 Château Latour
My last bottle of a batch bought in 1991 for 50 Euro/bottle, those were the days... The nose is a knock out of the park with complexity, intensity and fruit to die for.
The taste is not as awesome as the nose but I´m not complaining for this is a world class wine, with notes of perfectly ripe black currants, graphite and band aid. The finish is counted in minutes. Will go on forever. Tasted five times before - four times 100p and one 98p, which also is the score for this bottle.
98p   (tasted 2025/07)

1981 Vigorello, San Felice
A nicely concentrated, mature nose with notes of dry dark fudge, plums, violets and a hint of tooth paste. Round and good.
The taste is warm and sandy with soft tannins and a nice plummy fruit. Fully mature.
Vigorello was one of the first Super Tuscans with their 1968 vintage (of which I have a bottle :-). Back then it was a 100% Sangiovese wine. By now it is a blend of Pugnitello, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
87p   (tasted 2025/07)

1982 Château Tourans
I opened these two 82´s as replacements for the corked Grand Ormeau. The Château Tourans opens with a cool, elegant nose with notes of dried plums, spices and pipe tobacco. Very, very good.
The taste is nicely concentrated with a perfect maturity, silky tannins and a fine dried up sweetness. Bottles like this will continue for another 8+ years.
88p   (tasted 2025/07)

1982 Château Haut Milon
This Pauillac displays a rough around the edges nose with notes of dried black currants, iron, gravel and some band aid.
The taste is dry and a tad foursquare with dried red and black currant, dry tobacco and earth. Still some unresolved tannins but the fruit will not keep the distance.
82p   (tasted 2025/07)

And to finish the evening of:
20 Year Quinta do Bom Retiro, Ramos-Pinto
A very deep, mature nose with notes of fried nuts, damsons, old chocolate and detergent. A lovely dried up sweetness.
The taste is rich and concentrated with fiery notes, dried black fruit and assorted nuts. Very long.
91p   (tasted 2025/07)
