Election Barolo - 1997 Barolo Pajana, Domenico Clerico
Watching the election unfold last night needed a fine bottle of wine and this perennial favourite of mine did the trick.
1997 Barolo Pajana, Domenico Clerico
Popped and poured and right out of the gate this gives pure pleasure on the nose - sweet/sour cherries, raspberry licorice, incense, rosehips and that intoxicating scent of a warm Langhe earth. Evolves nicely over the evening and gets fatter and deeper with air.
The taste is velvety yet with a firm core and lots of sweet dried black fruit, melted tannins and fine notes of licorice, dried raspberries, warm tiles, smoke and dry leather. A long, balanced finish. I would say fully mature but it will keep on this level for 6+ years. Last time poured it was corked so it was nice to drink a fine bottle.
