Notes From A Tasting With Vintages 2019 - 1929

Mikke invited to a tasting between Christmas and New Year. Great food and wine were had.
All wines tasted double blind.

1988 Special Club Blanc de Blancs, Sugot-Feneuil
A deep, fine, mature nose with notes of almond paste, yellow apples, dry biscuits and hints of Manzanilla. Very, very good.
The taste is dry and stony with a fine roundness, a fresh acidity and notes or dry oranges, earth and minerals. Fully mature.
90p   (tasted 2021/12)

2007 Napa Valley Chardonnay, Château Montelena
A cool, creamy nose with notes of tangerines, smoke, wet cement and toasted bread. Very fine. Steely.
The taste is tight and handsome with notes of ripe oranges, grilled lemons, almonds and gravel. Long and fine. 4+ years.

2007 Corton-Charlemagne, Rapet
A very deep, aristocratic nose with notes of hazel nuts, wet stone, ripe lemons and birch sap. Complex and fine.
The taste is forward and focused with notes of lemon cream, cap gun smoke, sweet minerals and chalk. A brilliant acidity. Still young, 6+ years. Great wine.
95p   (tasted 2021/12)

1996 Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées, Domaine Michel Lafarge
A mature, a tad dried up nose with notes of earth, dried raspberries and lots of forest floor. Good.
The taste is better with a fine, mature concentration and notes of red cherries, dry licorice and herbs. Rustic tannins. Fully mature.

1996 Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu, Domaine de Comtes Lafon
A deep, somewhat meaty nose with notes of violets, dried raspberries and asphalt. Rustic in a fine sense.
The taste is dry and fine with lots of undergrowth, dried red fruits and a fine acidity. Again, a tas rustic and yet again, in a very good sense.
91p   (tasted 2021/12)

1996 Beaune Vigne de l´Enfant Jesus, Bouchard
A very deep, peculiar but very good nose with a fine dried up sweetness, lots of red beets, gravel and fresh herbs. High and fine.
The taste is mature and elegant with fine notes of red currants, cranberries, herbs and a hint of chocolate wafers. Very long. Very fine.
93p   (tasted 2021/12)

1996 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux- Saint-Jacques, Domaine Laurent
A big, open, gorgeous nose with notes of fresh stables, root vegetables, ripe raspberries, autumn apples and bonfire smoke. Very, very deep.
The taste is broad and focused with an old fashioned Burgundy feeling about it. Lovely fruit, great acidity and a taut structure for further ageing. Great wine.
96p   (tasted 2021/12)

2014 Kirchspiel GG, Keller
A intermission between Burgundy and Bordeaux. The nose is pure and fresh with notes of dry tangerines, elderberries, wet asphalt and grass. Very fine.

1978 Château La Lagune
My guess for this and the next bottle was 1978 and 1982, so I kept my mouth shut after that...
The 78 La Lagune offers up lovely mature nose with notes of pipe tobacco, black currant leaves and some dried strawberries. Very fine.
The taste is soft and mature with velvety black currants fruit and notes of tobacco, leather and lead pencil shavings. Long and fine.
92p   (tasted 2021/12)

1982 Château La Lagune
The 82 has a deep, sandy nose with notes of dried black currants, red beets, earth and a hint of dog fur. Very, very good.

1975 Clos Rene
A deep, mature, sweet nose with notes of plums, gravel and chocolate biscuits. Round and fine.
The taste is dry and earthy with notes of dried plums, tobacco and gravel. Good fruit. None of those harsch 75 tannins. Very, very good.

2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese, Willi Schaefer
A very young, fresh nose with notes of ripe green apples, oranges, grass and some fine candy notes. Very fine.
The taste is racy and refined with notes of lime juice, green apples, sweet minerals and grass. Very long and distinct. Great acidity. Really fine.
94p   (tasted 2021/12)

1929 Château Piada
A big, round, mature nose with notes of dried apricots, burnt rubber, band aid and detergent. Very good in a very mature, old fashioned way.
The taste is dry and a tad linear with notes of saffron, dried oranges, earth and hay. A fine dryness. Long. We were 30-40 years wrong in our guesses...
