A couple of months ago I tasted a young and a bit older Taurasi, and really liked the mature bottle. With some grilled home made burgers I thought I would open a Riserva from Mastroberardino that have had some years in the bottle.
1999 Radici Taurasi Riserva, Mastroberardino
The first pour is deep, tight and almost impenetrable. It needs a lot of time to open up. But when it does it is a great bottle of semi mature Aglianico. The nose is deep, powerful and fine with notes of black cherries, moist autumn leaves, old leather, raspberry truffles and some old wood. Intoxicating and beautiful.
The taste is big, tight, dark and concentrated with lovely notes of sweet black cherries, blueberries, really dark chocolate (90%!) and the floor of a coniferous forest. The finish is long, warm and intense. Great wine!
92p (tasted 2013/08)
