Vacation Wine Diary - Day 18 - 2008 Sta Rita Hills Chardonnay, Brewer-Clifton

Dear Diary

This afternoon we passed a fish shop and they had some nice shellfish lying there on ice, just waiting for us to take them home and devour them with some bread and a lime aioli.
I needed a wine to go along.
I tasted the 07 Sta Rita Hills some weeks ago and while very good it was very "American" in style - big, sweet and bold. I had heard that the 08 was more "European" in style. Just one way to find out - pull the cork!

What I have heard was right! Much more laid back and elegant than the 07, this displays fine aromas of grapefruit juice, orange peel, cold butter, ginger and a hint of coconut milk. Interesting and complex. Very, very good.
The taste is medium bodied and ripe with notes of apricots, orange peel, sweet lime and milk chocolate fudge. A very good acidity. Long and fine. This is good. Maybe a tad warmer in the mouth than on the nose but this definitely more "European" than the 07. And a little bit better.
