A Couple Of Days In Piedmont - Visit To Rocche Costamagna

The view from Rocche Costamagna´s terrace
My first visit during this trip was to Rocche Costamagna in La Morra. Giulia took great care of me and was a wonderful advocate for the fine wines of this estate.

2021 Langhe Arneis
A fresh, spicy nose jumps out of the glass with notes of white pepper, grey pears and gravel. Very, very good.
The taste is light and fresh with notes of minerals, pears and gravel, A fine salty touch in the finish. From grapes grown in Verduno.

2021 Dolcetto d´Alba
A juicy, upfront Dolcetto which sports notes of ripe blueberries, bakelite, licorice and fresh herbs.
The taste is spicy and direct with nice silky tannins and notes of damsons, blueberries and licorice. Very, very good. Grapes from La Morra.

2020 Barbera d´Alba
An open, round Barbera with a fine warmth and notes of raspberry jam, bonfire smoke and fried herbs.
The taste is warm and seedy with lots of sweet raspberry fruit, a good acidity and a long, fine finish.

2018 Barbera d´Alba Superiore Rocche delle Rocche
From Neirane in Verduno. This is a serious Barbera which have spent 12 months in one year old barriques. The nose is large scaled but very well balanced with lovely notes of ripe raspberries, bay leaves, sandelwood and a dark perfumed scent. Very fine.
The taste is tight and concentrated and offers up a great mix of fruit, acidity and tannins. Power with finesse. 6+ years.

2020 Langhe Nebbiolo
A refined, laid back nose with notes of earth, red cherries, rosehips and dry licorice. Very, very good.
The taste is open and delicate with silky tannins and nice cherry infused fruit. A great drink for now and the coming 8+ years.

2018 Barolo
A delicate nose with notes of rosehips, herbs and lots of red cherries. Very, very good in a lighter style.

2018 Barolo Rocche dell´Annunziata
A deep, handsome nose with notes of Christmas spices, licorice, rosehips and undergrowth. Racy and refined.
The taste is nicely concentrated with notes of red cherries, rosehíps, gravel and licorice. Very fine tannins. 6+ years.

2016 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell´Annunziata Bricco Francesco
This is a stunner. The nose is very deep, multi layered with notes of hard cherry candy, shoe cream, tobacco and forets floor. Lovely.
The taste is pure and persistent with a taut structure and notes of hard cherry candy, dried flowers, tobacco and earth. The finish goes on and on. Great wine. 8+ years.

2017 Barolo Rocche dell´Annunziata
The same evening I had a glass of the -17 Rocche dell´Annunziata at UVE winebar in La Morra. An open, warm nose with notes of asphalt, dried up cherry jam, forest floor and herbs. Very good in a more upfront way compared to the -18 (and the -16, tasted at Osteria Veglio in January).
The taste is big and warm with noyes of ripe flowers, asphalt, tobacco and leather. Long and fine. 3+ years.
