Bringing Back Memories - 1994 Montecillo Gran Reserva Seleccion Especial

As I noted in a previous post, I used to drink a lot of Rioja. But not lately. This wine was highly recommended by a friend so I bought a bottle.

1994 Montecillo Gran Reserva Seleccion Especial
Popped and poured. A mellow yet focused and complex nose with notes of dried strawberries, decayed soil, old leather, freeze dried coffee and a hint of dill. Old fashioned in a restrained and aristocratic way. Very, very good.
The taste is mature, intense and warm with notes of dried strawberries, red currants, dusty earth, dill and warm earth. A long, finely balanced finish. This is in a perfectly mature condition. A great mouth feel. Drinking great. A lovely dryness in the end. This I like. When you can buy a perfectly mature Rioja for 30 Euro - life is good.

  1. I totally agree, wonderful to be able to buy this right from the shelf. My only regret is that I didn't buy more of the 81 when that was in stock.

    Have a nice weekend /David
