1994 Merlot, Newton
A bit funky on opening but only after 20 minutes in the glass this 27 year old beauty offers up a mature, plummy nose with notes of forest floor, old leather and a ashtray full of exclusive tobacco.
The taste is round and sandy with notes of plums, cold coffee, warm tiles and gravel. Soft, silky tannins. Tasted blind I would have guessed a Pomerol from 85 or 89 ten times out of ten. Really yummy and perfectly mature.
