I was invited by Wine Affair to taste the new vintages from Catena Zapata.
Winemaker Nesti Bajda was present on screen and talked about the wines and the current vintages.
2023 Catena Alta Chardonnay
A cool, smoky nose with notes of white flowers, dry fudge and wet stones. Very, very good.
The taste is dry and spicy with notes of chrushed rocks, dried flowers and lemon cream. A fine acidity.
Will be released April 11.

2022 Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard White Stones Chardonnay
A tight, laid back nose with intense notes of smoke, incense, grilled lemons and chrushed rocks. Very fine.
The taste is cool and racy with a high acidity, notes of ripe limes, cap gun smoke and grey pears. Very long and fine. Will be released March 27.

2022 Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard White Bones Chardonnay
The plots of White Stones and White Bones are 80 meters apart, but this is a whole other creature. The nose explodes from the glass with stunning notes of dried up lemon cello, dried flowers and boatloads of fresh mint.
The taste is tight and concentrated with intensity, power and balance. Just brilliant. Will be released March 27.

2021 Catena Alta Malbec
An open, forward, fruity nose with notes of plums, moist earth, chocolate and tobacco. Very, very good.
The taste is round and rewarding with sweet fruit, cool tannins and a long, juicy finish. Will be released March 28.

2022 Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino
A dark, restrained nose with notes of cool blackberries, forest floor and tobacco ashes. A nice perfumed note.
The taste is seedy and concentrated with fine black fruit, tight tannins and a long, chocolate bitter finish. Very fine. Will be released March 28.

2021 Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae
A deep, layered nose with notes of plums, black currants, fir smoke, fresh stables and earth. Very handsome.
The taste is rich and focused with gorgeous black fruit, broad tannins and a long, long, structured finish. 6+ years. Will be released March 27.

2021 Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard River
This is like a black hole of dark fruit, smoke, earth and tobacco. Very restrained, focused and pure.
The taste is tight and tight and then tight. In the finish there are rich black fruit, fir wood, bakelite and undergrowth. This needs 10+ years, at least. Will be released March 27.

2021 Nicolas Catena Zapata
A wonderful Bordeaux like nose with notes of leather, black currant leaves, coffee powder and dog fur. Lovely.
The taste is medium bodied, balanced and with a low keyed intensity, beautiful fruit and long, luscious finish. 5+ years. Great wine. 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Malbec and 10% Cabernet Franc.
