First Day In The Mountains - 2008 Barolo Riserva Simposio, Bel Colle

We have gone to Sälen for a week of skiing (and in my case drinking wine...). First day - unpacking, grocery shopping and just settling in. Why not open a Barolo?

2008 Barolo Riserva Simposio, Bel Colle
This needs a lot of air, but then, ooh boy, this is gooood! From vineyards in Verduno this 10 year old Barolo displays a deep, high and pure nose with notes of hard cherry candy, forest floor, fresh mushrooms, clay and incense. Somewhat laid back - still youngish - but very deep and with a slumbering power. A lovely depth. Really fine.
The taste is tight and focused with notes of ripening red cherries, dry asphalt, dark flowers, licorice and masonite. The finish is very long, layered and showing fine, polished tannins. A Verduno lightness yet displaying a firm structure. Glad I have more. 6+ years.
