A Fantastic Tasting Dinner - 21 Vintages Of Château Pichon Baron


Lars & Maria kindly invited to this fantastic tasting of 21 vintages of Château Pichon Baron. We were seated at a table at the best meat restaurant in Stockholm (and Sweden) - Restaurang AG – Sveriges bästa köttrestaurang.
This is how it went.

Flight I
1934 Château Pichon Baron
A very fine, earthy nose with notes of dried strawberries, milk chcocolate, old leather and dried herbs. Very much alive.
The taste is light and lively with soft red fruit, no tannins what so ever but plenty of charm and drinkability. Held well over the evening.

1937 Château Pichon Baron
A soft, mature nose with notes of undergrowth, assorted dried berries, black tea and leather. 
The taste is dry and alive but there is a metallic note and it is a tad hollow in the middle. Has seen its best days.

1949 Château Pichon Baron
A very deep, layered nose with notes of ripe black currants, fresh stables, herbs, tobacco and a touch smoke. Really fine.
The taste is firm and focused with notes of dried up black currant jam, herbs, forest floor and tobacco. A long, lingering finish. Could still go on 6+ years.

1953 Château Pichon Baron
A deep, dark nose with notes of beef stock, mushrooms, dried black fruit and old leather. A bit all over the place.
The taste is tight and dry with notes of iron, undergrowth, dried black fruit and sweet tobacco. A fine warmth in the finish.

Flight II
1959 Château Pichon Baron
A beauty and my WOTN. A deep, hedonistic nose with notes of perfectly ripe black currants, expensive leather, an autumn forest and coffee powder. Pure. 
The taste is silky yet taut with perky black fruit, sweet minerals, a long, long finish with some tannins still present. Perfectly mature but could go on for another 10 years.

1961 Château Pichon Baron
A deep, dark nose with notes of plums, dried black currants, cement, Christmas spices and forest floor. A fine dried up sweetness.
The taste is mature and stern in a aristocratic way with notes of iron, dried black currants, herb and asphalt. Ends on a dry note. Very fine.

1970 Château Pichon Baron
A tad tired bottle bot still drinkable. The nose is high strung with notes of cooked red fruit, band aid, dried herbs and stale coca-cola. 
The taste is soft and dry with a hint of oxidation and notes of dried red fruit, earth, old leather and herbs.

1978 Château Pichon Baron
A deep, mature nose with notes of warm tiles, dried black currants, forest floor and ceder. Very nice.
The taste is tight and dry with notes of warm sand, dried red and black currants, autumn leaves and some dog fur. A tad on the light side.

Flight III
1981 Château Pichon Baron
A light, nice, layered nose with notes of mature red apples, autumn forest, dried plums and coffee. Very, very good.
The taste is light and fine with soft black fruit, silky tannins and a long, mellow finish. Highly likeable but not that complex.

1983 Château Pichon Baron
A deep mature nose with notes of forest floor,, fir wood, smoke and dried black fruit. A bit loose around the edges.
The taste is mature and dry with notes of gravel, red currants, matchbox and old leather.

1989 Château Pichon Baron
A tight, irony nose with notes of cool black currant fruit, smoke, graphite and fine tobacco. Still a tad restrained. Very fine.
The taste is intense and racy with notes of dried up black currants jam, chrushed rocks, iron and coffee. Very long. Gorgeous in a broad shouldered way. 6+ years.

1990 Château Pichon Baron
A deep, handsome nose with notes of ripe black currants, fresh stables, expensive leather and dark chocolate. Just lovely.
The taste is concentrated and focused with every not and bolt in the right place. Splendid fruit, still some polished tannins and a finish that goeso on for minutes. Great wine.

Flight IV
1994 Château Pichon Baron
A nice, herbal nose with notes of red and black currants, fir wood and dry tobacco. A tad on the light side of things.
The taste is light and dry with notes of red apples, coffee powder and lead pencil shavings. Good.

1997 Château Pichon Baron
A fine, open nose with notes of smoke, ripe black currants, tobacco and iron. Very, very good.
The taste is round and creamy with notes of rich tobacco, asphalt, smoke and plums. Highly drinkable.

1999 Château Pichon Baron
A stony, tight nose with notes of red apples, smoke, tobacco and road dust. Very fine in a austere way.
The taste is stern and seedy with fine notes of graphite, leather, tobacco and forest floor. 6+ years.

2000 Château Pichon Baron
A big, creamy, gorgeous nose with notes of ripe black currants, sweet tobacco, bakelite and some new oak. Very fine.
The taste is rich and concentrated with notes of plums, graphite, pipe tobacco and fir wood. Long with juicy tannins. 8+ years.

Flight V
2003 Château Pichon Baron
A large scaled, smoky nose with notes of ripe black fruit, thyme, sandelwood and fine tobacco. Very deep.
The taste is tight and concentrated with notes of ripe black currants, fire smoke, graphite and cold coffee. Very long. Broad tannins. 10+ years.

2005 Château Pichon Baron
A very deep, multi layered, focused nose with notes of silky black currants, iron, expensive leather, mocca and dark chocolate. Just lovely.
The taste is dark and intense with stunning fruit, polished tannins, a taut structure and a gorgeous balance. One for the ages, 10+ years.

2006 Château Pichon Baron
An open, spicy nose with notes of cement, red currants, fir wood and red apples. A tad restrained.
The taste is seedy and dry with sandy tannins, assorted red fruits and a linear finish. Needs some time to open up, 6+ years.

2007 Château Pichon Baron
A willful, candid nose with notes of black currants jam, Christmas spices, smoke and dark chocolate. Very, very good in a exuberant way.
The taste is intense and concentrated with sweet black fruit, polished tannins and a long, long finish. 8+ years.

2014 Château Pichon Baron
A young, potent nose with notes of ripe red and black currants, herbs, tobacco and graphite. Promising.
The taste is tight and focused with notes of red currants, cold coffee, bakelite and herbs. Blotting paper tannins. 10+ years.
